WASHINGTON, April 30, 2005 – Task Force Liberty soldiers used an unmanned aerial vehicle this morning to help track and detain two individuals who shot at coalition Forces encamped in Hawija, Iraq. Elsewhere, insurgents killed an American soldier in an attack in Khaladiyah today.
The UAV was dispatched to follow the suspects as they sped away in their vehicle. A combat patrol subsequently detained the suspects and their vehicle. Coalition forces suffered no injuries from the incident.
In Khaladiyah, a soldier assigned to the 155th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), was killed by enemy small-arms fire today.
The 155th is a U.S. Army unit assigned to 2nd MEF (Forward) for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Officials also announced that two other 155th soldiers with the 2nd MEF (Forward) were killed April 29 by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device near Diyarah.
Task Force Liberty soldiers also detained 15 suspects late April 29 while seizing 44 assault rifles, one MG42 machine gun, and two drums of ammunition during a combat patrol northwest of Bayji.
The patrol had stopped to question the 15 suspects after finding them with four cars parked along the highway. All of the detainees were taken to a coalition base for questioning.
Coalition officials also announced today that an IED attack had killed four Task Force Freedom soldiers in Tal Afar on April 28.
Two other Task Force Freedom soldiers were wounded in the Tal Afar IED attack; they were taken to a combat hospital for treatment. The names of all the deceased from the past several days are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
