One Soldier Killed, Two Injured in Vehicle Accident

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18, 2005 � A 101st Sustainment Brigade soldier was killed and two others were injured Nov. 17 in a vehicle accident during a combat logistical patrol north of Tal Afar, Iraq, military officials reported.
The soldiers' names are being withheld pending notification of families.
In other news from Iraq, Iraqi security forces and Task Force Baghdad soldiers responded to reports of two explosions in central Baghdad this morning. Initial reports indicate terrorists detonated two car bombs near the Al-Hamra Hotel on the Karradah peninsula. One of the car bombs detonated against a wall, and the second car bomb damaged an apartment complex near the hotel, officials said.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, responded to the site and requested support from the 92nd Engineer Battalion and the 36th Engineer Group to help in rescue efforts of Iraqi civilians trapped in the rubble.
In the skies over Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 60 close-air-support and armed-reconnaissance sorties Nov. 17 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and coalition ground forces operations creating a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.
U.S. Navy F-14s performed a successful air strike near Samarra, expending cannon rounds against an insurgent's vehicle. Near Ramadi, U.S. Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with insurgents.
Fourteen U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Also, British Royal Air Force fighter aircraft performed in a nontraditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
