Iraqi Police Training Turns Out Latest Graduates

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16, 2004 -- More than 1,500 people graduated from Iraqi police training courses today.
In Baghdad, 101 Iraqi Police Service "Emergency Response Unit" officers graduated from their training, part of the Iraqi government's continuing effort to stand up an elite 270-man police unit trained to respond to national-level law enforcement emergencies.
The four-week course runs recruits through special weapons and tactics-type emergency-response training, focusing on terrorist incidents, kidnappings, hostage negotiations, explosive ordnance, high-risk searches, high-risk assets, weapons of mass destruction and other national-level law enforcement emergencies.
At the Adnan Training Facility, 74 Iraqi Police Service officers graduated from two advanced courses: 42 from the basic criminal investigation course and 32 from the civil disorder management course. Officers spent two weeks negotiating the specialty-skill courses intended to augment their initial training. The facility graduates multiple classes each week, and the Baghdad area officers report back for continued duty at their respective stations immediately.
In Aman, Jordan, 1,423 Iraqi officers graduated from the Basic Police Training Course at the Jordan International Police Training Center. The graduation marked the completion of the eight-week training course recruits with no experience negotiate before reporting for duty. Prior-service officers attend a three week "transition integration program" course of instruction.
IPS basic training runs recruits through instruction in the fundamentals of policing skills, techniques and ideals of law enforcement in a free society preparing recruits for law enforcement operations throughout the country. All graduates will deploy immediately for duty at stations throughout Iraq.
