Iraqi, U.S. Forces Detain 23 in Two Separate Raids

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2004 - Iraqi National Guard and 1st Infantry Division soldiers detained 15 individuals during a joint operation today near Abbarrah.
The individuals are suspected of involvement in attacks against Iraqi and multinational forces.
Soldiers from the 213th ING and 82nd Engineer battalions also confiscated five anti-personnel mines, one rocket-propelled-grenade launcher and a detonation device.
The Iraqi Guard unit detained one individual for questioning, and the remaining individuals were transported to a Multinational Force detention facility.
On Dec. 18, Task Force Danger soldiers detained eight individuals who were fleeing the scene of an improvised explosive device explosion near Bayji.
The soldiers stopped two cars and found three cell phones. The eight individuals in the vehicles were detained.
The patrol also found two more IEDs in the area.
News reports also claim at least 60 civilians were killed and 130 were injured in cars bomb attacks in Najaf and Karbala.
