'Multiple Casualties' Reported After Blast at Base in Mosul

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2004 -- An explosion rocked a U.S. military installation in Mosul, Iraq, at noon local time today (4 a.m. EST), causing "multiple casualties," Multinational Force Iraq officials said in a brief statement.
The statement provided no other information.
In other news from Iraq, five Task Force Danger soldiers and an Iraqi civilian were wounded Dec. 20 when an improvised explosive device concealed in a vehicle exploded near Hawija. The six were traveling in the back of a Humvee at the time of the attack. The injured were taken to Multinational Force medical facilities for treatment and were reported to be in stable condition. One suspected anti-Iraqi fighter was detained at the site of the attack.
Task Force Baghdad soldiers found two car bombs and other weapons Dec. 20 in western Baghdad. The soldiers had received a tip from an Iraqi citizen describing a house where six insurgents were living and hiding rockets. Although no insurgents were discovered, the unit found two sedans outside an adjacent house that were wired as car bombs. Explosive-ordnance-disposal personnel destroyed both vehicles. The Task Force soldiers searched the second house and found two rifles and two fragmentation grenades.
Also on Dec. 20, 1st Infantry Division soldiers detained four people in a raid in Owja, near Tikrit. The raid was conducted to capture known financiers of anti-Iraqi fighters, officials said. The four were taken to coalition facilities for questioning.
Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division detained a suspect seen from the air placing an improvised explosive device Dec. 20 near Samarra. Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, detained the individual and transported him to a coalition detention facility.
Marines from the 1st Marine Division of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force seized several weapons caches in and near Amirya during clearing operations Dec. 20. The division will destroy the weapons and munitions in a controlled detonation, officials said.
The caches consisted of 51 60 mm mortars, 25 82 mm mortars, an 82 mm mortar base plate, five 14.5 mm barrels, 46 120 mm mortars, a 120 mm mortar base plate, eight 250-pound bombs, 140 Bangalore-style torpedoes, three 122 mm rockets, six 122 mm warheads, 3,475 14.5 mm ammunition rounds, five 120 mm rocket launchers, 70 grenade fuses, 3,000 feet of copper wire, 100 82 mm mortar fuses, 30 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, seven RPG launchers, an RPK machine gun, five AK-47 assault rifles, and three Dragunov sniper rifles.
