Troops Uncover Baghdad IEDs

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2005 – Task Force Baghdad soldiers uncovered five improvised explosive devices throughout the Iraqi capital today during separate city patrols, according to military officials.
The first discovery came in eastern Baghdad about 9:45 a.m. A tip from a local resident led a task force patrol to an IED: a 122 mm artillery round wrapped in plastic with protruding wires.
At 11:30 a.m. in northern Baghdad, another patrol found a roadside bomb: a 130 mm projectile.
In western Baghdad, two more devices were discovered at 1 p.m.: two 155 mm rounds. And a fifth IED was also found in western Baghdad at about 2:45 p.m.
All the devices were destroyed.
"We're working hard to ensure the safety of the Iraqi people," said Army Lt. Col. James Hutton, chief spokesman for Task Force Baghdad and the 1st Cavalry Division. "Every time we take an IED off the streets, we save lives.
"The terrorists who plant these bombs have no concern for innocent Iraqis living here," Hutton noted. "We've received more tips from area residents, but we're always hoping for more to stop the bloodshed."
Elsewhere, three U.S. servicemembers were killed in three separate incidents on Feb. 11.
A Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device in western Baghdad.
In Anbar province, a Marine assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in a nonhostile motor vehicle accident while conducting security and stability operations.
And a soldier assigned to the 1st MEF was also killed in a nonhostile vehicle accident. The soldier was conducting security and stability operations in the northern Babil province.
All three incidents are currently under investigation. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending family notification.
Also on Feb. 11, elements of Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, and Iraqi soldiers with the 504th Iraqi National Guard Battalion repelled insurgent attacks near the city of Husaybah.
Officials said an improvised explosive device initiated the attack. Enemy forces operating from the rooftops of buildings attacked the units' near their posts with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire.
The Marines and Iraqi guardsmen returned fire, killing two insurgents. Moments later, coalition units received indirect fire. The Marines counterfired. No U.S. or ING casualties were reported.
